A
38-year-old trader, Folake Ayinde, pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in
Lagos to dissolve her 14-year-old marriage to a policeman, citing threat to
life and constant battering by the husband.
Folake,
who lives at No.7, Baba Amara St., Ibafo, Ogun, alleged that the husband was
irresponsible and troublesome.
“He
is not responsible; he does not take care of me and our three children.
“My
husband is aggressive and arrogant, I want the marriage dissolved,” the wife
told the court.
“Our
last child was ill and she was to go for surgery, my husband did not come to
attend to her as he hardly sleeps at home.’’
She
disclosed that apart from constant beating, the husband also got his colleagues
in the police to harass and molest her.
“On
several occasions, my husband sent his colleagues to arrest me in my shop,” she
said.
The
husband, Kolawole Ayinde, 42, of No. 6, Amosu St., Ahmadiya, Abule-Egba, denied
all the allegations and urged the court not to dissolve the union.
He
claimed that as a police officer he usually work throughout the week.
“My
wife usually comes home late after the day’s job and this led to
misunderstandings between us as she refused to change.
“I
reported her to her mother to caution her, but to my chagrin, her mother told
me that she makes more sales at night in the shop selling beer and wine.’’
The
court’s President, Mr Phillips Williams, fixed March 30 for judgment.
